Early Saturday Morning of the Show
Frost on the Ground - Wood Stove being Started
___________________________________
As old New England farmers are wont to say, “the frost was on the pumpkin” when the school yard was being staked out early Saturday morning.  Tyngsborough-Dunstable Historical Society members Bill and Susan Psaledakis were at the School House before 7 AM to start the fire in the wood stove.

It was the first frost of the season in Dunstable, but the day soon warmed into a beautiful cloudless fall day with surrounding fall foliage in peak condition.  The grounds of the school house were also in impeccable shape with a recent mowing and trimming.

Coffee and donuts were available well before 8 AM thanks to the TDHS volunteers.  The Dunstable Rural Land Trust is in the process of acquiring a large parcel of land adjacent to the Little Red School House, and has given the TDHS permission to use part of it as a separate parking area adjacent to the Red School House.

This was a great improvement for our car meet, separating spectator and show car parking.   The parking area has a walk through the stone wall to the School House and provides an easier exit to the road with a much better line of sight.

The Little Red School House meet always seems to attract a very nice selection of cars from all vintages.  Several members of the Historical Society were appointed to chose the recipient of the Little Red Airplane Award.

The award went to an impeccably restored dark blue 1917 Pierce-Arrow Model 38 Roadster owned by John Walsh. There were many other outstanding vehicles there as well.

The optional foliage tour through the back roads of Dunstable, Tyngsboro and Westford attracted a bunch of cars and was led by Ed Green in his 1959 Chevrolet El Camino.  A separate group of cars went to the Tully farm to tour the dairy operation which has 350 acres 125 milkers and 125 young stock. The Tully farm supplies the Cabot Farms Cooperative.

Sam Gagliano purchased a very nice selection of AACA merchandise at the AACA National Fall Meet in Hershey, PA. that was used as raffle prizes.  The AACA National Club was nice enough to give Sam a discount on the items.

One of the meet entrants lost a pair of glasses in the field at the show.  Sam DeMarco took possession of them after just about everybody else had left and headed home.   The person who lost the glasses showed up after Sam had gone.  Sam was called and graciously turned around and came back to the show field to return the glasses.   Thanks again Sam.

All in all, it was a very successful meet that could not of happened without the help of all the volunteers.  If you volunteered we thank you very much.

We also want to thank all of the participants, especially those bringing vehicles that are not often seen at car shows.  We believe that the Little Red School House Meet gets a larger percentage of early cars than almost any other car show.

If you missed the 4th Annual Bean Pot Little Red School House Meet, you missed a great day!

Scenes from the Little Red School House- 2015

The Little Red School House Car Show is organized as an old fashioned low key car meet like the early Dusters Meets which were held for the first time in 1939.  We will hold a 50/50 raffle to benefit a charity and there will be door prizes and drawings.

We will have an optional foliage tour of about 15 miles through some of the scenic back roads of Dunstable, Tyngsboro and Westford for those who are interested,

This event, held on Saturday the week after Hershey is designed to help us get over the fact that end of the old car season is fast approaching and maybe it's time to put the old cars and trucks away for the winter.  On the bright side it's a great time to be in New England and the foliage is near its at peak.  This is the fourth annual event and we have consistently received extremely positive feedback from the attendees of the past meets.

Reserve October 15th (Saturday) to attend our "Little Red School House Meet” we have a great day planned at a great location.  We again have made arrangements with the Tyngsborough - Dunstable, MA Historical Society to hold our car meet at the Little Red Schoolhouse in Dunstable, MA.  This is an original, authentically restored 1790 one room school house that is complete with bench chairs and wood stove placed on a very large beautiful location amid farms and country background.  It is conveniently located off major highways and roads and can accommodate as many old cars, new cars, trailers or whatever you decide to bring or show.

The meet is a
No-Charge get together is for both Bean Pot members and non-members.  We will have reserved parking places for members of other car clubs that notify us.  If you have club members that would like to be parked together email info@BeanPotAACA.com or call 978 692 9440.

We also have plenty of parking for spectators with a new parking lot adjacent to the Little Red School House entrance.  We will have an optional donation box for spectator parking.

Coffee & Donuts, Beans, Franks, Hamburgers, will be available for purchase prepared and served by the Historical Society Members.

Plan to arrive at the School House at 10:00 AM or a little earlier for coffee and donuts.  You can also bring along your own picnic lunch to tailgate if you prefer.

The Little Red Airplane Award
___________________________________
The members of the Tyngsborough–Dunstable Historical Society will choose one vehicle to be the recipient of The Little Red Airplane Award.  The award is in appreciation of the Larter family who have made many contributions to the town of Dunstable, that have done much to preserve its rural character.  The Larter family donated the land where the 1790 Little Red School House now sits, after it was disassembled and moved up the road from Tyngsborough.

The award is being made in memory of Edward A. (Ted) Larter, Jr, who had a love of all things antique and mechanical, including Airplanes, Automobiles, Boats, and Motorcycles.   Ted had an antique biplane that he owned and flew, hence the inspiration for the Little Red Airplane Award.

We are encouraging everyone to drive his or her old cars or trucks to the meet, but we know that the weather may be iffy at best. If the weather doesn't cooperate we have secured the location for the next day (Sunday) as a rain or bad weather date.  If it is just cold we will still hold the meet on Saturday.

The old school house is weather tight and does have a wood burning stove to keep everyone warm and protected from bad weather.

We will be posting any updated and/or cancellation information on the club’s website.   For further information or questions email info@BeanPotAACA.com or call 978 692 9440.

We are looking forward to seeing you there!

We are having a pretty severe drought in the Bean Pot Region's geographic area, however in 2016 the drought seems to take a break whenever we schedule a car show.  In spite of a raw cold rainy day with temperature in the low 50's some diehards actually took their cars to the show.

We hat a total of about 10 cars, but we also had a good turnout of Bean Pot members and spectators most of whom huddled in the school building to keep warm.  Many thanks to East Boston Savings Bank who sponsored the event and had their mobile branch bank at the site.

Melmark New England is a school that serves the needs of children and young adults with autism spectrum disorders, acquired brain injury, neurological diseases and disorders, dual diagnosis and severe challenging behaviors in the Greater Boston area. It is an institution well worthy of your support.

The Ride for Kids

Every day, 13 children in the United States get the news that they have one of the deadliest forms of childhood cancer. Motorcyclists help fund raise by participating in a Ride for Kids event.

Donations benefit the Pediatric Brian Tumor Foundation's medical research and family support programs. Riders on all makes and models are welcome to attend.

2015 NE Ride for Kids - a Rainy Day
___________________________________
The Bean Pot Region of the AACA has been asked to coordinate a car show in conjunction with the Ride for Kids Motorcycle ride.

Cars in the show should be at the site before 9 AM to allow for  viewing by the ride participants.  The escorted ride starts at 10 AM  sharp, rain or shine!  The ride will loop back to the start point.

At the event, a drawing is held for a new Honda motorcycle and other great prizes (you must be present to win).  All participants receive free beverages, a light breakfast and lunch. You'll also get to meet your local Stars!

Last year's event raised over $40,000 for a very good cause.  The Bean Pot Region was only able to provide them with a couple of cars last year due to the inclement weather.  This is a very worthy cause hosted by a great group of people.  +We encourage members and non members alike to attend.

This event is open to all antique car owners, you need not be a member of the Bean Pot Region to attend.   Call Bill Pappas at 781-799-9574 if you need additional information.

For a 90 plus degree Saturday morning in July we had a very good membership turnout.  The meeting was advertised as a garage meet, but much to most members surprise it was located in a deluxe air conditioned carriage house.  There was Dunkin Donuts coffee, donuts and bagels for all to enjoy.

We had a number of important issues and plans to discuss with many constructive ideas put forth and some committees formed.

The members may be interested in seeing a 45 minute video (time permitting) about the restoration of the GM Futurliner #10 completed by dozens of volunteers over six years. We can view it on the TV in the garage.   You’ll find a brief blurb below about the vehicle and the restoration below.

General Motors Futurliner #10

On Display at the National Automotive and Truck Museum
Futurliner #10 was one of 12 large dual-front wheeled display vehicles designed specifically for the GM Parade of Progress. The GM Parade of Progress and its crew of about 60 young men carried futuristic and inspirational exhibits to millions of people across North America from 1936 through 1956.  This 1953 Futurliner, with 16-foot display doors on either side, was a perfect platform for static exhibits and live demonstrations of emerging technology.

The vehicle, donated to the museum by Joe Bortz of Chicago, was in disrepair. As anyone who has restored a vehicle can attest to, it was much worse than it looked – and it looked bad.

A group of volunteers in the West Michigan area. began restoring the vehicle in 1999.   With volunteer labor and countless donations of materials and money, the Futurliner was completed 7 years later.

The Futurliner DVD titled ‘Miracle at Beaverdam’ is now available of the Futurliner restoration project. The clip is narrated by Raffee Johns (actually, it’s an actor’s voice) who tells a little bit about his experience with the Parade of Progress. The approximate 45-minute video chronicles the history and restoration of Futurliner #10.

The video unfolds the story of how Don located the Futurliner to the National Automotive & Truck Museum of the United States (NATMUS) in Auburn, Indiana.  While NATMUS owns the vehicle, it was released under its “Partner Program” and Don trucked it to his pole barn in Beaverdam, Michigan – hence the name of the video, “Miracle at Beaverdam”.

This fascinating video contains some rare original footage of the GM Parade of Progress, the amazing Futurliners that carried a circus of technological marvel and wonder to communities across North America and the restoration of Futurliner #10.

The Lloyd Graves barnyard picnic this year will be on Saturday July 16th.  It is a free event, we call it a picnic so folks can bring their own food if they need it to supplement their own diets.  Lloyd Graves our host for the picnic is providing pizza and beverages as well as desserts. In the past, folks have brought their tasty homemade goodies.

Lloyd opens his museum home for his guests to walk around and enjoy his antique clock collection, the ladies can use the house bathroom.  The guys can use the unique outdoors home made facility.  Most of the entertainment goes on in the auto barn and beautiful yard next to the car parking area.

We will be joined by a few other car clubs, the big field out back can be used for modern cars & trucks and a new antique car show off area.  Lloyd will have a talk on his AACA National First Place Junior Award winning 1912 Ford Model T Torpedo Runabout.

We will take a minute to salute the flag and to honor our heroes and old car guy heroes.  This event is a North Shore Old Car Club event as well as a Bean Pot Region event along with other invited clubs.  This is always a very enjoyable event – try and be there.

Arrive early to beat the Saturday morning Beach & Maine traffic on 95 and 495.

Most really good suspense stories or novels usually have a back drop of thunder, lightning and rain. Those of us who get involved in planning car shows know the suspense is almost always tied to about the same thing.  Bad weather and good attendance just don't mix because we all know what it takes to clean up a show car after a drive in the rain or wet muddy fields.  Well - the Larz Anderson show had plenty of suspense tied to it last Sunday morning as the clouds rolled in and the sky darkened.   For our museum show hardened work crew the question was
"No - it can't rain again this year"!

The suspense was over at 8:00 AM.  It rained - and hard. Thankfully, there wasn't any lightning or thunder but the amount of rain easily made up for that.

Even though the weather may have stunk (is that politically correct?) it was the catalyst for a lot of members and friends to huddle in a tent or shelter and start the car experience AKA "war" stories going.

Our first tech session of 2016 occurred on Saturday, February 20th and was hosted by 3D Printsmith, LLC in Allston, MA  www.3DPrintsmith.com.   About 20 Bean Pot chapter members and their guests gathered to learn about 3D printing, a rapidly advancing technology that offers car collectors new options for making hard-to-find parts.  To satisfy the high level of interest in this topic, two 90-minute sessions were offered back-to-back.

Sean O'Reilly, car enthusiast and owner of 3D Printsmith, shared his expertise through a comprehensive PowerPoint presentation, demos of printed parts, and a lab tour.  The primary methods include stereolithography (SLA), digital light processing (DLP), multijet modeling (MJM, Polyjet), fused deposition modeling (FDM), selective laser sintering (SLS), and powder/binder methods.  Material options include polymers, ceramics, and metals.  Both 3D laser scanning and computer aided design (CAD) modeling are used to generate digital representations of parts to be printed.
___________________________________
3D printing offers numerous advantages over traditional fabrication processes such as machining, molding, and casting.    Part complexity is not a burden, with fewer manufacturability restrictions to consider at the design stage. Rapid prototyping is possible, offering time savings and obviating hard tooling costs.  Digital models are easily modified and scaled.  In many cases, assemblies of moving parts can printed as a unit.  3D printing also be used in combination with other processes, such as in creating molds for casting metal parts.

Please join us for a fun and informative tech session on 3D printing, a new technology that car collectors like Jay Leno are using to make hard-to-find parts.  Expert Sean O'Reilly, car enthusiast and owner of 3D Printsmith, will walk us through the basics of 3D printing.

Don’t expect a dry PowerPoint slide presentation, however.  This tech session will be very hands on, providing the opportunity to observe the tools of the trade and handle parts.

So after 55 years,  for the final time on October 30, 2016, the Amherst event will be held on the last Sunday of the month.

The location in southern New Hampshire has approximately 30 acres and about 500 flea market spaces in a country setting.  The show starts early with a lot of activity beginning before dawn.

The crowd at the June 26, 2016 show was down from the previous month's show.  It appears that the vendor spot price increase from $35.00 to $55.00 for the 2016 season continues to significantly reduce the number of vendor spots that are taken.

News:

They have reduced the price for Spectator and Show Car parking from $10.00 to $ 5.00.   They now are offering 10 x 20 vendor spaces for $25.00.

Amherst prices from their website as of July 18, 2016.

Show car spaces:              $5
Cars for sale spaces:         $35

Many Bean Pot members participated in this unique event.  This is a very well organized affair with collector cars parked on the main and side streets of the downtown area that draws thousands of spectators to   Newburyport.  Once again they had a warm summer's evening and from the looks of things all of the restaurants and shops were very busy.

A tip of the hat to Wes Pettengill for a job well done.  Click on the link below to view an excellent photo gallery of the event on Linwood St Vintage Car Galleries,  with several Bean Pot members' cars pictured.

They are looking for someone to show an Amesbury built car in a place of honor at their Amesbury Days celebration.

Members - Can you think of any other owners of Amesbury built bodies such as Biddle & Smart, Walker, Currier & Cameron or Judkins that they might contact?

Take a picturesque New England town, add the celebration of a quintessential American holiday, mix in a clear summer’s day, and you’ll have Harvard on the Fourth of July.

The parade will be held Saturday, July 2nd at the Harvard Town Common at 11 AM and will proceed to the school for display.   Everyone will enjoy the convivial atmosphere before the parade over coffee and donuts.

DUE TO TOWN HALL CONSTRUCTION, CARS WILL GATHER AT THE FIELDS IN FRONT OF THE LIBRARY, AT 4 POND ROAD.  THOSE WHO WANT TO DRIVE IN THE PARADE WILL THEN PROCEDE TO THE PARADE STAGING AREA.

Judging will be done by peer ballot.  Thus, it is important to arrive at the Library parking lot for registration and judging by 9:30 a.m. on the morning of July 2nd.  This will allow you ample time to look over some wonderful old cars and be ready to go by the 11:00 a.m. parade start.

The parade route is a short one and is mostly downhill, so that overheating is not a problem for cars in the parade.  The parade route ends back at the library's grass field which has many other ongoing festivities.

Last year was great with many Antique and Classic cars participating.  The variety and quality of the cars displayed was phenomenal.  Many very early cars frequently show up along with the occasional steamer.

The Harvard 4th of July committee welcomes any suggestions that will help make this an enjoyable event for everyone.

Maybe this recap should be called a post-mortem.

It appears that the vendor spot price increase from $35.00 to $55.00 for the 2016 season continues to significantly reduce the number of vendor spots that are taken.

The number of antique and classic cars on display also seemed to be down compared with the previous show in June with about half as many cars on display.

I am not sure about the spectator count, but on the bright side there seemed to be a good number of people walking around with purchases.

Late Breaking News:

Spectator and Show Car Parking has been reduced to $5.00 from $10.00.  10 x 20 Vendor Spaces are now available for $25.00.  Per their website as of July 18, 2016.

The location in southern New Hampshire has approximately 30 acres and about 500 flea market spaces in a country setting.  The show starts early with a lot of activity beginning before dawn.

The crowd at the May 29, 2016 show was down from previous year's Memorial Day weekends.   Suspected causes are an increase in spectator parking from $5.00 to $10.00 per car and an increase in a vendor space from $35.00 to $55.00.

The number of vendors was way down from previous events, although the number of spectators seemed like a smaller decline from previous holiday weekends.  Much grumbling was heard about the charge for bringing in a show car, with some owners turning around and leaving rather than pay the fee.

Later in the day the price for bringing in a show car was reduced.  In the future Show Car parking will be the same as Spectator parking - $10.00.

Amherst prices from their website as of June 9, 2016.

General parking:              $10
Show car spaces:              $10
Cars for sale spaces:         $35
Vendor spaces:                 $55

For those Bean Pot Members who do not travel south for the winter and are in need of an old car fix, check out the Model T Ford Snowmobile Club's annual national meet.  It is being held in Morrisville, Vermont, which is about 10 miles north of Stowe, VT.  They are a friendly group and will give rides to spectators free of charge.  At past national meets the number of Model T and Model A Ford snowmobiles has ranged from 15 to 45 cars.

If you have never seen a group of Model T snowmobiles in action zooming across the fields, it is quite a sight to see.   This was how folks in the north country got around before the snow plow was in general use.

Friday and Saturday usually have the most snowmobiles in action as some folks pack up their machines on Sunday for the trip home.
