It was a cool and sunny fall day for our 3rd Annual Little Red School House Meet in Dunstable and the foliage was near peak color.  The event has always been scheduled for the Saturday after Hershey meet as kind of a Last Hurrah for the old car season in this part of the country.  The Little Red School House and field is an ideal venue to hold an old car meet.

The members of the Tyngsborough-Dunstable Historical Society had the wood stove fired up, the coffee brewing and donuts available shortly after 8 o’clock in the morning.

Although the meet was scheduled to start at 10 AM, the first participants began arriving shortly after 8 AM.  We had a great turnout, more than double the previous year’s total, due we think to good feedback from the previous two events and extensive flyer distribution.

We had some excellent support from other Antique Car clubs in the area including; the Thunderbird Club, the Mid State Antique Auto Club, the North Shore Old Car Club, NEMAC-North East Massachusetts Antique Card Club, the Autoneers Region of the Horseless Carriage Club of America, and the Yankee Ingenui’T’ Chapter of the Model T Ford Club of America.

We are very pleased that this meet is attractive to owners of early cars with a number of brass era cars present and also many cars from the teens, twenties, thirties and forties were on display.

We had a very good turnout of spectators that appreciated viewing the early cars, and many offered their amazement in that they can still be driven successfully on the road.

The meet is a non-judged show but this year we offered one award chosen by members of the Bean Pot Region and the Historical Society.

The award is in appreciation of the Larter family who have made many contributions to the town of Dunstable, that have done much to preserve its rural character. The Larter family donated the land where the 1790 Little Red School House now sits, after it was disassembled and moved up the road from Tyngsborough.

The award is being made in memory of Edward A. (Ted) Larter, JR, who had a love of all things antique and mechanical, including Airplanes, Automobiles, Boats, and Motorcycles.

Ted had an antique biplane that he owned and flew, hence the inspiration for the Little Red Airplane Award. The Award was won by a finely restored 1957 Thunderbird owned by a member of the Thunderbird Club.

We had many members volunteer their services in helping run the meet with traffic, parking, registration, and raffle duties.  We also had a large number of members from the Historical Society volunteering their services with food preparation and tending the wood stove in the School House - we could not do this meet without them.  In addition, the ladies of the baking club with their fine cakes, pies and cookies deserve a big round of applause.

The Little Red School House Car Show is organized as an old fashioned low key car meet like the early Dusters Meet which was held for the first time in 1939.  We will hold a 50/50 raffle to benefit a charity and there will be door prizes and drawings.

We will have an optional foliage tour of about 15 miles for those who are interested, through some of the scenic back roads of Dunstable, Tyngsboro and Westford.

This event, held on Saturday the week after Hershey is designed to help us get over the fact that end of the old car season is fast approaching and maybe it's time to put the old cars and trucks away for the winter. On the bright side it's a great time to be in New England and the foliage is near its at peak.  This is the third annual event and we have consistently received extremely positive feedback from the attendees of the past two meets.

We are encouraging everyone to drive his or her old cars or trucks to the meet, but we know that the weather may be iffy at best. If the weather doesn't cooperate we have secured the location for the next day (Sunday) as a rain or bad weather date.  If it is just cold we will still hold the meet on Saturday.

The old school house is weather tight and does have a wood burning stove to keep everyone warm and protected from bad weather.

We will be posting any updated and/or cancellation information on the club’s website.   For further information or questions email info@BeanPotAACA.com or call 978 692 9440.

We are looking forward to seeing you there!

With most of the region socked in with a drizzly rain for Sunday we only had a couple of cars turn out for the car show. However, the car show location was free of rain for just about the whole day with one short period of drizzle. The organizers were most gracious in understanding that car collectors do not take their cars out in the rain. The motorcycle turnout was also way down. In spite of the weather, the Ride for Kids raised over 40,000 for the day.

The highlight of the meet was Lloyd Graves’ 1911 Ford Model T Torpedo Roadster newly restored by Dave Emery.  If you missed seeing it, look for it on the show field at the AACA National Fall Meet in Hershey.

This multi-club event is always great and this year was no exception.  Lloyd is a great host and thanks  so much for having us.

Ominous weather forecasts throughout the week before the show for rain on Sunday proved to be correct.  The rain luckily held off for most of the morning except for a few brief showers.

The show turnout was down this year because of the weather forecasts, however the people that showed up had a fun day.  We finished the judging a little early so we could hold the awards before the rain was scheduled to start in earnest.

We had a great bunch of members who volunteered their services for the meet, and our show sponsor East Boston Savings Bank was a tremendous help in putting on the show.  Please contact them for your banking needs.

During the week prior to the show, the Boston Globe ran a story about Richard Gavegnano President, Chairman and CEO of the bank talking about his interest in antique automobiles that included information about the Bean Pot Region's Larz Anderson show.

1939 Chrysler Royal 4 Door Sedan - HPOF Award
___________________________________
We had one young man James Dean Shevuncy Caffray who brought his 1939 Chrysler Royal Sedan to its first ever car show. It was awarded the HPOF Award (Historic Preservation of Original Features).  It is encouraging to see a younger person with interest in an older car and it gives one hope for the future of the antique car hobby.

Trophies were awarded before the expected heavy rain in the afternoon.  The best of show was awarded to Brian Page for his 1937 Ford DeLuxe Tudor Sedan.  The Larz Anderson Award went to Ed Green for his 1959 Chevrolet El Camino pickup.  The East Boston Savings Bank Award went to Larry Nivenberg for his 1957 Pontiac Safari wagon.

We had a nice warm sunny day for the first ever car tour run by the Bean Pot Region.   Our meeting place was at the Bass Pro Shop in Foxboro, MA, which is located in the shadow of the Patriot’s Gillette Stadium.  Before we left on the tour, a check was made to insure that none of the tour cars had under inflated tires.

Dean Zwicker and Joe Viera planned an excellent route on back roads through some beautiful towns and scenic areas.  Doug Reinbold and Joe Viera provided trouble trailer support for the tour.  After a long hard winter with the antique cars not being used, we indeed had a couple of cars with problems and the trouble trailer was put to good use.

The highlight of the tour was our destination – the Holmes Bus Services Company.   The hospitality of the Holmes family led by Richard and Tim Holmes was truly legendary.  We began with a tour of their school bus garage facility with several restored antique school buses commemorating the founding of this family run company in 1932.

The bus garage facility itself is amazing, it looks like an old colonial farmhouse from the road, but it is a typical modern industrial style garage building in the back.   We also viewed a collection of bus automobilia and a 1933 Chevrolet school bus undergoing restoration.

Cars are lined up on the field on Friday and Saturday by show registration number, then on Sunday the cars are lined up by class for judging.  The show was originally proposed by the Stowe Area Association to generate lodging business during, what was then, the slow summer season.  The popularity of the show makes it the busiest weekend of the year in Stowe, busier than any ski weekend.

In the evening, many cars gather in Stowe Village, giving the village a look of yesteryear.  The show usually attracts about 900 cars, from many surrounding states and Canada.

Spectators and participants both had a very enjoyable weekend with many favorable comments heard throughout the event. Many improvements were made to this year's event with rave reviews heard about the food. Congratulations to Darren Stewart who did a tremendous job in his first year of coordinating the event.

Thanks to both the students and the volunteers it was a smoothly run event.  Thanks also go to the North Shore Old Car Club for their participation and judging support.   Many Bean Pot Region AACA members also participated in the event in multiple ways.
